Elementary School Student Teaching: SP 17
I worked in a class of 33 fifth-graders at Samuel Clemens Elementary School in the Milwaukee Public School District. I had 8 special education students in this class and had to incorporate a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into the lessons, as well as providing additional support for students as needed. I began the semester by observing and providing in-class support for the main classroom teacher. By the end of the first month, I was teaching Math classes solo. By the end of the semester, I was teaching all subjects solo and was functionally the classroom teacher. Main highlights from this role include participation in Professional Development days, a 5th grade trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, supporting the 5th grade graduation activities, and Junior Achievement BizTown (an integrated curriculum and onsite visit where students learned about society, math, and more by taking on roles in an imaginary town).
Through this experience, I designed and implemented lesson plans, recorded a lesson I taught, and had in-class observations as part of my licensure requirements. I passed my EdTPA and earned my Elementary/Middle School Teaching License, which in Wisconsin expired in 2021 and in Illinois expired in 2024.
Middle School Student Teaching: FA 16
As part of the required Math curriculum and my Middle-School Licensure requirements, I was expected to student-teach for a middle school Math class for one semester. At Nativity Jesuit Middle School, a private Catholic all-boys Middle-School, I observed the Math teacher, designed lesson plans, and taught Math lessons to a class of 30 6th-grade boys. I also observed the teacher's 7/8th grade Math classes.
Reading Capstone: SP 16
As part of the required Reading curriculum and my Elementary Licensure requirements, I went through preparation classes for my Reading Capstone, where I was in charge of teaching phonics to 3 2nd/3rd graders who were struggling with reading. I had my own small classroom on campus and students were bussed to our reading room after school to engage in these weekly small-group lessons.
Service Learning- Classroom Observation, Classroom Assistantships, and Afterschool Support: FA 13-FA 16
As part of my preparation to student teach, I engaged in various service-learning requirements while in the School of Education at Marquette University. These included afterschool support, in-class observations, and classroom support for teachers in public and private schools across Milwaukee.
World Travelers Camp
For seven summers, I worked as a camp counselor at the Skokie Park District World Travelers Day camp. This was an education camp for children ages 5-10, where we would learn about the Art, Music, and Dance of a different country each week. There were two sessions each summer, each totaling 4 weeks. Throughout my 7 years, I learned and taught about approximately 40 countries.
In this role, I...
-researched each of the summer's 8 countries to present students with appropriately-themed educational materials such as books, pictures, and games/activities for each week
-was the primary counselor in charge of safety and classroom management for a group of 20 children (split by age: 5/6, 7, 8-10. At various points over the years, I led all age groups)
-was in charge of leading whole-camp activities for 60 children (including all-camp field games, rain days, pre-guest artist activities, etc.)
-supported our Art, Music, and Dance specialists in teaching lessons and classroom management. (At various points over the years, I partnered with all specialists)
-established rules, managed safety aspects, and monitored lists (such as passing the swim test, allergy lists, and sign in/out sheets)
